The End of MPI 104

ITS OVER!!
Woah. scary... this semester went ridiculously fast! I have learnt soooo much from MPI 104. I came into the class being quite well... uninformed, re. the wonder that is the internet, and I honestly feel I have a much stronger grasp on well, everything that we covered! <mainly because the only thing I had even heard of out of the stuff we did was Google haha how very sad!!!>
However, now I feel quite confident in:
 * Blogger -  in which i created my very first blog spot! I posted comments, changed the template, added video's and images, added RSS feeds from various pages, added a counter, technorati favorites link which gave me authority, I created to-do lists and well... did lots of awesome stuff I never knew i could do on the net!
 * Flickr  - now this site I think i will continue to utilise out of class. Its so speedy with photo uploading and you can tag your photos and search a bazillion other peoples for pics of interest, its just really very cool. We created a group, and I made some sets! Fun fun fun
 * Del.icio.us  - now i must admit, I'm not the biggest fan of this device. Its a good concept being that you can access your booked marked sites from any computer, but, i dunno... i just don't like it! However, being a fabulous student and all, I bookmarked 36 sites of interest to me :P
 * Athene Website ! This was the funnest thing I feel in MPI104. I'd never done anything like it before so I was very excited to create a web page - even if its not amazing or anything, just altering the template with photos and text and adding links, RSS feed, a counter, blog and all that jazz was very exciting! actually more exciting then that, was going on a random computer and typing in the address and it actually coming up - yaaaay for having a successfully published page through fetch!!
We also looked at...
* FTP - File Transfer Protocol - transferring files over the Internet
* Technorati - my authority is 4 and my rank is 1166069 - pretty dismal!
* Counters - keep a record of visitors to a web page <they are very cool - makes me feel loved!>
* RSS which is similarly awesome. I never knew you could get updates/feeds from various sites - I feel enlightened! :P
* Google - google has everything! Im amazed! These are my favourite - Google docs, Google reader, Google Calender, Google Maps - tis craaazy!
Overall I learnt so very much! and i found it quite a challenging subject - which is probably bad because a lot of people consider it easy, so I'm probably going to dieee in MPI110 but eh, i like a challenge!! Gooooooodbye and thank-you for your teaching services!! :D

Drama drama drama!

Major drama with my webpage!! Well its all sorted now but half an hour ago i may or may not have been having a heart attack! <slightly extreme>.... <but seriously>....!
Soooo I made my athene webpage in iweb with all the correct thingy's - rss, counter etc. and I was very proud of being organized <6 days in advance WOO>, I come to Jack Cross to publish it and 'webpage is not found' i was like WAaaaaaat <insert freak out!!> and after like an hour of hyperventilating and fiddling around trying to make it work I force Tom to walk over the hill to help me <note this is like 10.30pm and the killer kangaroo's are out> so he comes, and is no help lol <i appreciate the thought Tom haha> so thennn we ring Josh who is my saviour!! It turned out i deleted the public html file, incredibly unintelligent of me! so really it wasnt that much of a drama after all <insert sigh of relief>. That is my story!
Annyong!

Sex and the City Movie!

I cant waaaait for this movie to come out next week on the 5th June Yaaaaay! i heart SNTC! therefore you all get to suffer my excitement by witnessing the trailor :)

Counters and RSS

Counters are a way of viewing how many people have visited your website. Once they have been set up they will increase by one every time the web page is accessed in a web browser. They are quite useful in gaging the popularity of a web site, aka. the number of hits you've had. I added one from "easy hit counters" which i think is pretty cool - so far i've had 26 views! woooop!
Now onto RSS, aka. Really Simple Syndication. I really don't find this all that simple, but i'm sorta lacking in the intelligence in the multimedia department! okay, so RSS is..... a web feed used to alert people to frequently updated content. Things such as blog entries, podcasts, headlines etc. which you can then subscribe to and receive automatic updates! ingenious! It saves you wasting time going to sites constantly to check for updates, when you can simply have them emailed to you automatically for example.
Google reader is an excellent example of RSS. Within your google reader account you search for various feeds off the internet and then subscribe and get instant updates within reader. I subscribed to "quote of the day", "how to of the day" the MPI104 blogspot and a couple of other random interests! fun fun fun!

Technorati

Technorati...... gah.
That is all i have to say on the matter!

...actually thats a lie because then i would probably fail! :P hmmm ok so technorati is.... a web device that reads all of the HTML code in a blog posting, and tracks all of the activity around a blog or post. It competes with Yahoo, Google and Ice rocket, and indexes over 112 million weblogs. Its different from google because google is a general search engine for all forms of web pages where as Technorati is specifically for weblogs. My Current technorati rank is 1,910,875 which is a bit sad! but im sure in time it shall go up a bit! I only have 4 authorities at the moment, <aka. 4 websites linking to mine in the past 180 days, but im working on it :P > so in the very bottom corner of my blogspot page please be ever so kind to add me as a favorite and therefore increase my authority and eventually one day i may be able to take over the worlddddddddd....
etc.
etc.
amen :)

File Transfer Protocol

Here we go again, another day, another random web device :)
Today we are being educated on FTP, aka. File Transfer Protocol. This according to Wikipedia is "a network protocol used to transfer data from one computer to another through a network, such as over the internet"
<see full definition> The positives of FPT include:
  • the ability to transfer files over any TCP/IP network for manipulation on another computer on that network <regardless of which operating systems are involved-as long as the computer permits FTP access>
  • FTP servers can be set up anywhere between game servers, voice servers, internet hosts, and other physical servers.
Some negatives/risks of FBT are that:
  •  passwords are sent in clear text - which can be intercepted by those willing
  •  it utalises multiple TCP/IP connections, which means firewalls may need additional logic/configuration changes to account for these connections
  • It is possible to abuse the protocol's built-in proxy features to tell a server to send data to an arbitrary port of a third computer
  • When file transferring if the process is interrupted, the receiver has no way to know if the received file is complete or not
  • no method specified for transferring data in an encrypted fashion
To minimise the risk on non-encrypted data transfer "The common solution to this problem is to use either SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), or FTPS (FTP over SSL), which adds SSL or TSL encryption to FTP", also using protocol enhancements such as Kerberos to stop eavesdroppers.
